To understand these ways Sometimes I hide for a little Could you come and find me You could solve me like a riddle Why don’t you journey your way inside Head back for the ride Howling from a balcony Yeah we’re off the rails Yeah he’s all thrills What could stop this loving We’re written into the seams We’re written Written into the seams

Roots deep, it’s no weeding me out making strides building steam no reasonable doubt puffin lye tryna scheme get by with my means yeah I been going through the motions ten toes to the ground only pause to take a Peek at the clouds still outta reach what i been dreamin’ about So far to go I hope this wind enough to see me through Yeah, i’m walking to a different tune Used to stress the destination but that’s old news keep some cess for hesitations when they come round Block ‘em when they sound where i’m headed know it’s homebound Chukwu just off the name you know I show out Naturally I came some ways I gotta throw down tacitly I set the pace only hustle on the case It’s better you hide than ride at my rate I made it far wit a few ties dug through them crates n From the lows found new highs it’s crucial when you dealt the same woes, no nuance. I’m strapped up holding down the post like Toussaint to keep ‘em at bay eyes locked on the prize through the rest of the wave on the prize through the rest of the wave.

When I look out On this moonlight night I feel a part of something else The smoke in the air The wind in the leaves Clouds are hanging over me But when I look out on this bloodstained land And you say I should be proud I wanna spiral down Take a pill and fall asleep In this future, nothing's as it seems I wanna spiral down Take a pill and fall asleep

You messed it up again Grew out your friends Grew out your hair and grew away I'm trying to dissipate Or reappear A magic trick to heal my pain How many steps did I take? How many falls did I make? And what did I learn? You were just a figment of a dream A fig tree in a seed Cautionary tale I didn't read I said please I became your giving tree I'll say you were nothing to me You told me that you wouldn't hurt me Cut off all my leaves Had to grow out of this mess Had to grow out of my dreams I had to grow out my hair Grow out my friends, Grow out this place, grow out, and go Grow away Grow away

about

Threnody is a tribute to this grim year we have lived through. In some ways I grew a lot this year, and most significantly I rediscovered a passion for music that I haven't felt for a long time. I'm so grateful to have met the amazing collaborators who featured on this album and lent their voices to something that was originally going to be a very insular affair. Despite my personal growth, I feel an overwhelming sadness due to the countless lives lost not only at the hands of a virus, but also a cruel government that does not protect or serve the very people who put them in power. This album is dedicated to everyone we've lost this year and is meant to be a sonic space to reflect and remember during a time when many of us have not been able to.

All sales of the album in 2020 will go to COVID Bail Out NYC, a community bail fund that has freed over 200 people from NYC jails since April. www.covidbailout.org
